Information for current pupils of Dale AFC School of Motoring

Below is an outline of the manoeuvres you are taught. Use this section to

revise your reference points and re-cap the technique etc....

Remember, the methods below are the general methods. If we have slightly 'tweaked' the method for your personal use then remember to change the methods below to suit your personal changes.

Turn in the Road

Remember, the turn in the road doesn't have to be done in 3 goes, it can take as many as is reasonably acceptable.

  • Effective all round observations
  • Using clutch control, move the car forward and steer fully right
  • Stop when near to the kerb. Put handbrake on & put into reverse
  • Observations
  • Reverse, steering fully to the left and looking over both shoulders
  • Stop when near to the kerb. Put handbrake on and put into 1st gear
  • Observations
  • Move forward, steering as much as is necessary to the right to move the car away.
  • If you do not feel the car will avoid the kerb then stop and repeat steps 3 onwards.

Bay parking

When practicing this, remember to imagine you are in a busy car-park. The Trafford Centre on a Saturday afternoon! Observations are very important whilst carrying out this manoeuvre.

  • Pull up about a cars width away from the spaces you are reversing into
  • Put into reverse and do all round observations
  • Reverse back until your point of turn and stop (remember, whichever white line you use, you will go into the THIRD space back)
  • Observations
  • Reverse, steering quickly & fully to the right
  • Stop when you are straight
  • Observations (including checking that you are inside the lines)
  • Reverse, taking off (steering left) 1 1/2 turns
  • looking over both shoulders, reverse until you are completely into the space

Left hand reverse - Sharp (short)

Remember, the examiner will not tell you if the corner you are asked to reverse into is a short or sweeping corner. You will have to observe that yourself and use the correct method to help you around.

  • As you drive past the road you are about to reverse into, check that it is safe & legal. Also asses what type of corner it is
  • Pull up about a grids width away from the kerb & about 2 car lengths forward of the corner
  • Put into reverse gear
  • Observations
  • Reverse back until your point of turn and stop
  • Observations
  • Reverse and steer quickly & fully to the left
  • As you are reversing around the corner, make sure you are observing all directions. If you want to, stop to have a check around
  • Once you are straight in new road, stop, observe all around and check if you are straight and/or close enough into kerb
  • If you need to adjust the position of the car, then remember only slight turns of the wheel are usually required - approx 1/4 turns
  • Once you are satisfied the car is straight and close enough to the kerb, then reverse back in a straight line for approx 2-3 car lengths

Left hand reverse - Progressive (sweeping)

  • As you drive past the road you are about to reverse into, check that it is safe & legal. Also asses what type of corner it is
  • Pull up about a grids width away from the kerb & about 2 car lengths forward of the corner
  • Put into reverse gear
  • Observations
  • Reverse back until the sticker appears to touch the kerb and stop
  • Observations
  • Reverse and put on 3/4 turn to the left
  • You then need to keep the sticker touching the kerb all of the way around the corner until it reaches the straight part of the new road       (if the sticker appears to move onto the road, steer towards the kerb. If the sticker appears to move onto the pavement, steer away from the kerb)
  • Remember your observations as you reverse around the corner, stopping if necessary

Parallel Park

  • Pull up parallel to the vehicle you are going to reverse around and be approx a doors width away and half a car length forward
  • Put into reverse
  • Observations
  • Reverse until cars are level and then stop
  • Observations
  • Reverse and turn one full turn to the left
  • Continue reversing until the kerb completely goes from view in the lens and stop
  • Observations
  • Reverse and turn the wheel fully to the right right
  • Continue reversing until car is straight
  • Turn the wheel until the whels are straight

Independent Driving:

HERE you will find the parents guide to Independent Driving. This guide is helpful for those pupils who are looking to do private practice. This guide is also helpful if you are struggling to get to grips with Independent Driving but unable to get private practice. Get a friend or relative to drive the routes with you observing.

The routes found in this guide are actual test routes but the DSA can change any route without warning so it is only a guide to help.
